WEDNESDAY MARKET UPDATE |
|
Good morning. First note since Friday. The index barely moved in between; almost nothing else stayed still. |
■ | Meta had its best day since April. Up 11.4% Monday and near 30% this month, on a two-week-old product. ■ | Anything that bills you quietly got hit. Charles Schwab fell 6.7%, Allstate 6.0%, the financials index 2.4%. ■ | The 10-year made a fresh cycle high. 5.06% this morning, up nine basis points on five-year-best activity data.

OIL FELL NINE PERCENT. YIELDS ROSE ANYWAY. |
|
Gold is $4,280.36, down 1.92%, with silver off 3.77% to $64.53. The 10-year Treasury yield hit 5.06% this morning, a fresh cycle high, on September activity data with the strongest hiring since 2022. |
Here is the part worth saying out loud. Since Labor Day I've run yields through energy — oil up, inflation up, yields up. Brent has now fallen about 9% from its September peak and sits below $100, and the 10-year made a new high anyway. |
So the bond market has stopped trading the pipeline and started trading growth. That headwind doesn't get repaired in six weeks. Silver's 2.8% pop on Friday, which I read as leadership, has been given back in full — it was an oil-relief bounce. |

THE MARKET REPRICED EVERYTHING THAT NEEDS YOU DISTRACTED |
|
Meta launched Muse on September 8 — an agent that sends email, books travel, fills out forms and makes purchases for you. It passed 902,000 downloads in six days and topped both US app stores. Meta rose 11.4% Monday; Charles Schwab fell 6.7%, Allstate 6.0%, Planet Fitness 11%. |
Everyone is arguing about who wins. For someone holding an index fund, the sharper question is what gets destroyed. A real share of this index earns its money from customers not paying attention — the unused membership, the cash account paying 0.4% while Treasury bills pay 4%, the policy that renews 12% higher because switching takes an afternoon. Financials alone are about 13% of the S&P 500. |
Amazon's answer says more than any analyst note. A company making $68 billion a year selling ads to shoppers did not build a better agent. It blocked this one. |
What to watch |
Whether other retailers block Muse or sign deals instead. Then third-quarter results from the exposed names, where the line that matters is the retention rate, not revenue. |

META, SCHWAB, ALLSTATE |
Meta Platforms $META (▲ 11.4%) — best single day since April, and up close to 30% this month. |
Charles Schwab $SCHW (▼ 6.7%) — worst of the financials, on an agent that would sweep idle cash into higher-yielding accounts by itself. |
Allstate $ALL (▼ 6.0%) — fell with Progressive after Muse was demonstrated shopping for car insurance. |
Booking Holdings $BKNG (▼ 3.9%) — slid with Expedia off 3.7%, as an agent does the aggregating for free. |
Shopify $SHOP (▲) — rallied after confirming Muse checkout integration, taking the other side of Amazon's bet. |
These are Monday and Tuesday's moves. For real-time data, I recommend monitoring Finviz. |
